Types of Cylindrical grinders

The cylindrical grinders also called center type cylindrical grinders. These grinders are intended primarily for grinding plain cylindrical parts and also used for faces and shoulders, Contoured cylinders, Fillets, cams, crank shaft.

The types of cylindrical grinders are mainly three types they are.

  1. Plain center type cylindrical grinders
  2. Universal center type grinder
  3. Centerless grinders

Plain center type cylindrical grinders:

Cylindrical grinders

A Plain center type cylindrical grinding machine is essentially a lathe on which a grinding wheel has been substitute for the single point tool.

  • On plain grinding machines the work process maybe stopped automatically when the work piece has been finished to zero.
  • In one method automatic caliper type of gauge system attachment to measure the work piece and stop the operation at the proper time.

It consists of:

  1. Base
  2. Tables
  3. Head stock
  4. Tail stock
  5. Wheel head
  6. Cross feed

Universal center type grinder:

Universal center type grinding machines are widely used in the tool workshop for grinding tools.

  • In the universal type grinding method the work can be held and revolved by a chuck as well as ground between centers.
  • The head stock can be swivelled at an angle in a horizontal plane.

It consists of:

  1. Hand wheel for manual feed of wheel head
  2. Knob for setting automatic feed of grinding wheel
  3. Knob for changing speed of automatic table traverse
  4. Control panel for electrical
  5. Hand lever to engage fine traverse of table … etc..!

Centerless grinders:

Centerless grinding machine is a process of grinding exterior cylindrical, tapered and formed surfaces on work pieces. The work pieces are not held and rotated on centers.

The work rest is located between the wheels. The work is placed upon the work rest and the latter together with the regulating wheel.

It consists of:

  1. Housing for motor
  2. Grinding wheel head
  3. Wheel truing mechanism
  4. Grinding wheel
  5. Work
  6. Regulating wheel
  7. Work rest
